PERU, Mass. - Pigs, sheep and goats are some of the animals you will see at Berkshire Farm Sanctuary. All the animals at the farm have been rescued from slaughter, abuse and neglect.

- Volunteers can help with the animals needs
- The animals are rescued from slaughter, as well as abandoned and neglected
Founder Dori Scofield created the sanctuary out of her other nonprofit, Save A Pet, which helps dogs and cats. Her passion has always been a love for animals, and she wanted to help farm animals as well.
“I’ve always had farm animals of my own, and I can see there’s such a need for their rescue. And people often don’t think of farm animals as pets or as lovable and they’re just so amazing,” Dori Scofield said.
The nonprofit is trying to expand to be able to save more animals. It is always looking for donations and help from volunteers. One of its biggest projects right now is to help create a new barn for the sheep.
“We just took the side off the side of the running shed, and we want to make a real barn out of it. That’s what we are raising money for right now, so that we can move the sheep into that barn and rescue other animals like horses, donkey, alpacas, mini-horses in the main barn,” said Scofield.
The farm has 22 animals and is in the process of rescuing another pig that jumped off a slaughter truck in Iowa and will live out the rest of his life on the farm.
“These animals here will never have to worry for the rest of their life,” said Scofield.
Some of the volunteer work expected is hay clean up, stall readying, feeding and even some sheep shearing.
