PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Wahconah Park’s grandstand has been closed since 2022 after an inspection. The Wahconah Park Restoration Committee has been working on plans for the park, but those plans have not yet come to the mayor’s desk.

What You Need To Know

  • Wahconah Park is expected to not be open for the 2025 baseball season

  • Mayor Peter Marchetti has not seen the finalized plans yet from the Wahconah Park restoration committee

  • The project is still short on funding

  • The Pittsfield Suns say they are ready to return to the park whenever that may be

Without seeing the plans, the mayor says a new stadium likely will not be done by the time the 2025 baseball season comes.

“In an effort to control expectations, I think it’s pretty clear to say that there will be no stadium built for 2025 ball. That doesn’t mean that were not going to keep plugging and trying to find the direction, it just means that lets set some realistic terms,” said Pittsfield Mayor Peter Marchetti.

According to the Berkshire Eagle, the restoration committee’s chair, Earl Persip III, said it would be tough to have the stadium ready for the 2025 season.

The project is currently expected to cost $26 to $28 million, and they are still about $8 to 10 million short when it comes to funding. The mayor expects to have the report from the committee by the weekend.

Some people near the park are disappointed the stadium won’t be open next year.

“Again, disappointing. Sometimes when some things let go too long — that’s my worry — I hope it doesn’t turn into another year and another year,” said Michele Shier, owner of Viale Florist, located next to the park.

The Pittsfield Suns of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League are currently inactive, not playing at Wahconah Park for the 2024 season.

Sander Stotland, the Suns' GM and president, said in part, “It’s obviously too early to know what the 2025 season will look like for baseball in Pittsfield, but the Suns remain as excited as ever about opening the new Wahconah, whenever that may be.”
