WORCESTER, Mass. — Worcester Red Sox infielder Eddy Alvarez can play the infield or outfield and make each look natural. This shouldn't surprise anyone who knows Alvarez, as he is one of only six athletes in Olympic history to medal in both the summer and winter Olympics, earning silver medals in short track speed skating relays (2014) and in baseball (2021).
So how did Alvarez juggle both sports?
"I did a lot of jumping around," said the 34-year-old Alvarez. "Right out of high school, I knew if I wanted to make it to the Olympics, I had to take it seriously, and that's when I decided to drop baseball completely, drop my scholarship that I had to go to a school in Miami, and focus solely on skating. So I didn't pick up a bat for two years after high school."
