WORCESTER, Mass. — Police in Worcester arrested 53 people and one juvenile Friday night after they allegedly took part in an illegal car show.

The department says officers assigned to the Summer Impact program responded to a number of complaints about a large gathering at the former Dick's Sporting Goods in Lincoln Plaza.

Citizens also reported a large group of cars driving recklessly throughout the area and shopping plaza. According to the department, roughly 30 cars were gathered behind a building, with some speeding off upon their arrival.

Police say impromptu car shows have become problematic recently, with officers responding to several dozen incidents of gunshots, property damage, erratic driving and large disorderly groups.
