WORCESTER, Mass. — Every two years when the Olympics roll around, no matter if it's the summer or winter games, Worcester Red Sox infielder Eddy Alvarez gets chills, because he knows how hard every athlete has worked and all their sacrifice.
He also knows how proud you feel and what a sense of triumph to be on the medal stand representing your country.
Alvarez is one of only six athletes in history to medal in both the winter and summer Olympics, having done so in speed skating and baseball.
"An athlete sacrifices a lot in their life whether that be social or relationships," said Alvarez. "Standing on that podium solidified the journey was worth it. And just to get to relive in the baseball world and get that opportunity to play on Team USA was epic. Because when I retired from skating, I really thought I was never going to experience the Olympics again."
