WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester city leaders held a ribbon cutting on Tuesday for the new District 120 apartment building in the Canal District.

The mixed-income affordable housing rental property is at the site of the former Table Talk Pies headquarters on Washington Street.

It offers 83 units ranging from one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments at or below 30 and 60% of the area median income.

The project is part of the larger mixed-use redevelopment at the four-acre site.

“But even more critically, this addition of affordable housing for individuals and families is needed now more than ever as we face a housing crisis across the country,” said City Manager Eric Batista. “District 120 also helps us address the need for more accessible housing in the city, with 11 accessible units in this development here.”

“We wanted everybody to enjoy the benefits of this transformation, looking into this beautiful ballpark,” said Massachusetts Secretary of Housing and Livable Communities Ed Augustus. “Folks on limited incomes, we wanted them to be part of the renaissance of this neighborhood, of this city.”

The city said more than 750 people applied for a unit in the building and residents were picked from a lottery.

All spots have been filled but not everyone has moved in yet.
