WORCESTER, Mass. – The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally has led to several questions about security lapses with the Secret Service.
Investigators are now trying to determine how the gunman was able to get so close.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who oversees the Secret Service, said the assassination attempt was a “security failure," and an independent review of the incident will be conducted.
Rep. Jim McGovern said it's important to find out exactly what happened.
“Find out whether or not some protocols weren't followed, whether they could do a better job,” said McGovern. “What I hope doesn't happen is that this turns into a circus and the House Oversight Committee with the Jim Jordan and Marjorie Taylor Greens of the world trying to come up with conspiracy theories. Let's find out what actually happened. Clearly, there was a failing here. Let's identify it. Let's find out why and let's make sure it never happens again."
McGovern aid he also agrees with the decision to give a Secret Service detail to third-party presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr.
Kennedy's father was assassinated while running for president in 1968.
