BOSTON - Gov. Maura Healey said on Tuesday that housing is the biggest issue Massachusetts is facing, and with a tax cut program to incentivize building more housing. She hopes developers will consider more than just luxury homes to invest in.
What You Need To Know
- The program allows for up to $30 million a year to be given to those who build and renovate housing projects
- This year, projects in 11 cities received money, including a handful of central and western Massachusetts projects
- Last week, Secretary Ed Augustus announced 2,000 affordable housing units will be built, but these market rate units are just as important for people when inventory is so hard to find
The program allows for up to $30 million a year to be given to those who build and renovate housing projects. This year, projects in 11 cities received money, including a handful of central and western Massachusetts projects.
“These investments represent that we are creating more places that more people will call home,” said Governor Healey. “For working people, for families, for seniors. And with that, enhancing the vibrancy of our great communities.”
For the Secretary of Housing and Livable Communities Ed Augustus, he says he knows from personal experience as a City Manager in Worcester how important these investments are in gateway cities.
“Having been a city manager of a gateway city, I know what an important tool this is to help bring back our downtowns, our commercial corridors, in our gateway cities by adding market rate housing to the mix,” said Augustus.
Last week, Augustus announced 2,000 affordable housing units will be built, but these market rate units are just as important for people when inventory is so hard to find.
