BOYLSTON, Mass. – Massachusetts typically sees a bloom of flowers in the spring, but this year, the color has continued into the summer with hydrangeas.
New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill said there are a few reasons why the plant is having a better flowering season this year.
Director of Horticulture Mark Richardson said the rain we experienced last summer and the mild temperatures this past winter are good ingredients for the flower to grow.
"Most hydrangeas are relatively bullet-proof landscape plants,” said Richardson. “They work really well as long as they're properly sited and they’re happy in the growing conditions they have. Hydrangea macrophylla are the common blue hydrangea we think of. They are particularly sensitive to moisture in soil, so we're seeing a lot more of those flowers in the landscape this year as a direct result of having all that moisture last year."
Richardson said lilacs also had a good season this past spring, for the same reasons as hydrangeas.
