PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Monday, city councilors gave preliminary approval to a new trash contract with Casella Waste for trash and recycling.

This contract would give every home in Pittsfield a 48-gallon tote for trash and another for recycling. People are able to get a second recycling tote for free and another trash tote for a fee of $40 a quarter as part of their water and sewer bills.

A formal session of city council will happen on June 11, where the plan could be permanently approved.

Pittsfield Mayor Peter Marchetti says a couple of issues need to be clarified beforehand.

“There were probably seven issues that came out one was the timing one was a favorability clause, one was a 90-day cancel termination by cause the cost of the transfer station sticker, so we are going to work through those issues and come up with a resolution before June 11," said Marchetti.

Marchetti says if done right this will save the city $80,000 a year in collection costs and almost half a million in disposal costs.
