WORCESTER, Mass. – A foundation created in honor of a fallen Worcester police officer is teaching students lifesaving skills.

The Manny 267 Foundation set up at Forest Grove Middle School on Friday to teach students CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator.

Officer Manny Familia died nearly three years ago trying to rescue a drowning teenager. Both he and the boy died.

The foundation works to raise awareness about drowning hazards and the importance of water safety. Teaching students CPR is a new addition to its programs.

"This is a matter of life and death,” said Manny’s brother and president of the foundation, Elvin Familia. “This is a skill that hopefully none of these kids ever have to use. But, you know, if eventually they come to the situation when they need to use it, they have it. It may be used to save a siblings life, a relative. So it's very important for everybody to know the skill of CPR."

"You can save a life, you know, anywhere, any time," said a Forest Grove student. "And I didn't know a lot about the topic. And I’m glad to be informed just in case."

"I think it's very important to learn this, because you never know it can happen anywhere," said a Forest Grove student.

Forest Grove was the second school the foundation visited. It's hoping to visit all Worcester schools to teach students CPR.
