STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. – Spring is here at Naumkeag, which has planted over 50,000 tulips, daffodils and small bulbs for the 5th annual Tulip and Daffodil Festival.
What You Need To Know
- Over 50,000 tulips and daffodils planted at Naumkeag
- It's time for the 5th annual Tulip and Daffodil Festival
- Visitors can come and enjoy all the flowers in bloom
- It ends May 12
All over Naumkeag’s 48 acres are filled with different colored bulbs and flowers for spring.
“These all get planted every year, different species, different varieties, and been helping out doing this for the last couple of years. It’s a lot of fun and it’s a lot of fun even at the end,” said a volunteer named Julie, who was prepping flowers for bouquets.
Several volunteers work at the garden.
“I absolutely love this. I make sure I am here to help every year because it’s probably one of the more beautiful spots in the Berkshires,” Julie said.
It takes some time to prepare for the festival to be in perfect bloom. Planting started as far back as last fall.
“Tulips and daffodils are always, it’s always a little tricky to time the event for us, so hot weather kind of pushes the blooms faster. But luckily for us, this spring has been pretty cool, so the blooms are lasting longer," said Naumkeag’s horticulturist Stephen Zelno.
Naumkeag welcomes all. There is a $25 charge for nonmember adults. They ask that you don’t pick the flowers, or bring pets.
Most importantly, they want you to enjoy the outside and have fun.
“Post-COVID, it’s kind of become more and more important to kind of get outside. People are itching to get outside, enjoy the natural areas, historic sites and the beauty of spring right now,” Zelno said.
This event is free for children under 12 and there’s a special bingo game to help them learn facts about the flowers around the gardens.
The event runs until Mother’s Day on May 12. It's open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.
