WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester's interim police chief is responding to concerns about the reconfiguration of a city street.

In a letter to city councilors, Chief Paul Saucier said there have been fewer crashes in the past four months since the reconfiguration of Mill Street, when compared to the same period last year.

Saucier said it's only a short time frame, and he needs more time to see if the new design is safer. He did say it makes drivers slow down, which should help decrease the number of crashes.

"I would say a sample of one year and then match that one year to the previous year, also going back five years," said Saucier. "So you want a one year sample and a five year historical of that same area. Now you can get more information as to whether or not that improvement actually reduced vehicle accidents."

Saucier also said he lives near the area and drives the road often. He admits it was a little confusing at first, but he got used to it.
