WORCESTER, Mass. – International Women's Day celebrates the achievements of women and calls for gender equality. It dates back more than a century, and Massachusetts has a rich history in fighting for women's rights.

This year's theme is "Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress." The goal is to achieve gender equality by 2030 and close a $360 billion annual deficit in spending on gender-equality measures.

The Miss Worcester Diner is one of many women-owned businesses in the city. Owner Kim Kniskern takes pride in running the historic hotspot.

"It means a lot because, you know, as we all know, it's a world mostly dominated by men business owners,” said Kniskern. “You know, I get a lot of respect from a lot of people in the city. People love the fact a woman is running this place. It makes me feel proud and happy, as well."

Kniskern's message for young women is to never give up on their passions.

The list of female pioneers with connections to the Bay State who are celebrated during this Women's History Month includes Susan B. Anthony, Abby Kelley Foster and Abigail Adams.
