BOSTON - TD Garden has a new bag policy in place which downsizes what visitors can bring into the arena.

What You Need To Know

  • TD Garden has a new bag policy in place where bags larger than 6" x 4" x 1.5" are no longer permitted

  • All permitted bags are subject to visual or x-ray screening upon entry

  • Guests with non-complying bags can store their items for a $15 fee

  • The new policy, which aligns with a new partnership between TD Garden and Evolv Technology, went into effect on Saturday, Feb. 17

Under the new policy, any bags larger than 6" x 4" x 1.5" are no longer permitted in the arena. Guests bringing now-oversized bags can store their belongings with an on-site locker company for $15.

The new rules come hand-in-hand with a new partnership between TD Garden and Evolv Technology, a security tech company specializing in AI-based detection tools.

James Duggan at Anna Maria College served as the commander of the Massachusetts State Police Anti-Terrorism Unit and has experience with FBI Boston. He said it makes sense for the security team at the Garden to make use of new technology like artificial intelligence to increase safety and reduce lines at entrances

"I really think this is more about this technology is going to allow them to not have to manually search the bags by only allowing the smaller bags," Duggan said. "It's the technology is going to be able to do its work and keep people moving at a fairly steady pace. It's not going to create a backup and that dangerous bottleneck. That narrow area tends to become very congested and it creates a dangerous spot."

Evolv Technology did not respond to a request for comment on their new partnership with TD Garden as of Wednesday morning.

Some women have expressed concern about being able to fit their belongings and feminine hygiene products into a smaller bag size. Medical and diaper bags larger than the new limits are allowed.
