PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Former Olympian Conrad Mainwaring pleaded guilty in Berkshire Superior Court Thursday to sexually assaulting boys while working as a counselor at a Berkshire County camp.

Mainwaring is now 72 years old. The alleged crimes took place while he was working at Camp Greylock in Becket in the 1970s. He was indicted in 2021 on 12 counts of indecent assault and battery.

Prosecutors said some of the victims were under 14 years old. One detailed his suffering while calling for justice.

"I personally don't think he can ever be trusted around boys or young men,” said David Sweat, a survivor. “Our victims survivors group has knowledge of over 400 of us that were reportedly abused by Mr. Mainwaring. Isn't that enough?

“His guilty plea should include as much jail time as possible. He should be deemed as high a level of sex offender allowed under the law, and Conrad should be restricted from having contact with boys or young men, and he should not be allowed to coach, which is what gave him access to the boys and young men he abused."

Mainwaring is facing 10 to 11 years behind bars. The judge described it as a "life sentence" based on Mainwaring's health and age.
