STURBRIDGE, Mass. - Several local police departments, the Massachusetts State Police and more than 40 other law enforcement agencies are teaming up to deploy traffic safety resources along the Route 20 corridor stretching from Massachusetts to Oregon.

Nearly 200 car crashes resulting in injury happened along Route 20 last year in Massachusetts alone.

The Shrewsbury, Auburn and Sturbridge police departments are among those lending resources to help reduce speed-related crashes and injury. The goal is to educate drivers about dangerous behaviors like speeding, distracted driving, improper lane changes and signal violations.

Sturbridge Police Sgt. Sean Paine said his department responds to about 600 crashes a year, with a majority of them happening at the Route 20 intersection near Cracker Barrel.

“It’s a really tough intersection,” Paine said. “There’s a driveway, three or four different businesses there – you’ve got the Comfort Inn, people are slowing down for Wendy’s, to get gas, to go to the Dunkin Donuts there.

“People are trying to pull out across four lanes of traffic and the speed limit there is 45, accelerating into a 50. People are coming off Interstate 84 there, so it’s a very dangerous intersection.”

All agencies along Route 20 conducted a one-day enforcement initiative earlier this month. Sturbridge police stopped more than 70 cars, issuing 25 verbal warnings, 51 written warnings and 2 criminal complaints.

They are set to hold three more enforcements days later this year.
