WORCESTER, Mass. - A gas leak reading in the explosive range closed a portion of Park Ave. in Worcester Monday.

More than 100 people were evacuated from surrounding homes and businesses around 11 a.m. Monday. The gas leaked into a home from the street and gas levels in the building were reading above explosive range, according to the Worcester Fire Department.

Assistant Fire Chief Adam Roche said once the utility was able to shut off gas and electricity in the building, they would ventilate it.

"The potential for danger is here," Roche said at the scene Monday afternoon. "Right now, we're actually above the explosive range. When we bring it back down, it brings it back to the explosive range. That's where were trying to monitor the building and levels and make sure there's no ignition sources while we bring the levels of gas down through that explosive range."

The road was reopened around 2 p.m. No injuries were reported.
