WORCESTER, Mass. - Some residents of an apartment building in Worcester have been displaced following an attic fire late Sunday morning.
Dozens of firefighters responded to 66 Waverly Street after getting a call about smoke coming from the roof of a three story building.
Nearby streets were blocked off as first responders worked to get the fire under control. South End District Chief William Mosley said crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the building, adding that Sunday’s cold conditions come with their own set of challenges.
“Cold weather conditions present a number of challenges,” Mosley said. “The water supply, a lot of times there are frozen hydrants. The water we use creates icy conditions for firefighters, working in the cold weather itself. It kind of keeps the smoke from clearing out, we can’t see as much as we’re used to seeing, making visibility a lot more difficult for crews operating inside.”
Mosley said eight residents of the building were displaced from the fire, and the Worcester Fire Department is working with the Red Cross to give them a place to stay warm in the meantime.
