It was a busy night of hockey action for both boys and girls in central Massachusetts on Wednesday.

The top-ranked team in the state in boys hockey, St. John's Prep, beat St. John's (Shrewsbury) 6-1 at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough.

St. John's (Shrewsbury) was buzzing early on and had some great scoring chances, but St. John's Prep goalie A.J. Farese was awesome, making some point-blank saves. Down on the other end, Pioneers goalie Dante Sousa was tested as well and came up big to keep the game scoreless early.

Late in the first period, St. John's Prep broke through with two goals - the first from Caleb White, the second from Brady Plaza - giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.  Brady Chenevert scored the only goal for the Pioneers, who are now 9-3, while St. John's Prep improved to 9-1.

Meanwhile, at North Star Ice Sports in Westborough, the Shrewsbury girls hockey team beat Westford/Littleton 3-1.

The Colonials were flying up and down the ice and peppering the Westford Academy goalie in the first period, but could not dent the net and it was scoreless after the first period. Shrewsbury was able to break through with two second period goals, the first by Natalie MacCausland and the second by Blaire Fay.

Paige Umile scored the third goal for Shrewsbury, while Risa Montoya made 21 saves for the Colonials. Shrewsbury improved to 4-2-3 with the win.
