WORCESTER, Mass. – Saint Vincent Hospital, like other health care facilities in the state, says they've seen a large increase in respiratory illnesses following the holidays.

The Worcester hospital says they're treating people with RSV, COVID-19 and influenza, as well cases of pneumonia.

Chief of emergency medicine Dr. Adam Darnobid said some patients are coming in with a combination of more than one illness. He said there are ways to avoid becoming seriously ill.

"Wear your mask, wash your hands, get your vaccines,” Darnobid said. “I would encourage people to keep themselves and their families safe. If you have loved ones who can get sick, I would be cognizant of that.

“Swab yourself, see if you're positive before you go for a family dinner or go out with them. And if you're not feeling well, I would consider changing your plans or wear a mask when you're in close proximity to somebody who might get sick from these illnesses."

Several area hospitals are also implementing mask mandates again. At Saint Vincent, health care workers and visitors are required to mask in clinical areas, while patients are required to mask when clinically indicated.
