GRAFTON, Mass. - The death of four-month-old puppy is prompting a warning about the dangers of rat poison.

Boxer Rescue Inc. in Grafton tried to save four-month-old Nora after the puppy ingested a lethal dose of rat poison at her previous owner's home.

The organization’s director, Lisa Barker, said it's a tragic accident. She said the poison was kept in a place accessible to the puppy and could've been prevented.

Barker is reminding dog owners about the precautions they should take.

"So, the message here is there's other ways to get rid of pests and rodents from your house without putting down rat poison, especially where a child, a dog, a cat or anything can get to,” Barker said. “If it's in the house and you have a puppy, of course they're going to be curious and they're going to get into something. And these things are blocks, so she ingested four or five of these blocks."

Barker said there are other types of deterrents people could use for rodents which are safer and non-lethal.
