WORCESTER, Mass. - The former RMV site in downtown Worcester will serve as an emergency winter shelter starting next month.

The City of Worcester says it expects the shelter for single adults experiencing homelessness to open the week of Dec. 11.

The South Middlesex Opportunity Council will operate the 60-bed shelter. It will be staffed 24/7 through the end of April and provide meals, support services and a security detail.

Last year, the Blessed Sacrament Church served as a winter shelter and faced backlash from some neighbors and businesses due to safety and litter concerns.
