WORCESTER, Mass. - Saturday's season finale marked the end of a remarkable run for the fifth-year seniors on the Holy Cross football team.
The Crusaders captured a share of their fifth straight Patriot League title with the season-ending win over Georgetown. Prior to the current championship streak, Holy Cross had only won one league title in the previous 27 years.
This season's fifth-years played a part in each of the league titles and formed the foundation for the Crusaders' recent success. They are also leaving a program and coaching staff that has meant so much to them.
"It's meant everything to me," said offensive lineman Pat McMurtrie. "I always say, I owe everything, all the friends and teammates I have, the relationships with coaches, all of it is from Holy Cross football. For me, I owe everything to it and that's why for me this program means so much to me."
"It means the world, these last five years have been nothing but special to me," said offensive lineman C.J. Hanson. "I've been given everything, given opportunities to prove myself, and it's really built me into what I am today and I couldn't be more thankful. It's truly a blessing."
"It's going to be hard for me moving on from this place," said linebacker Jake Dobbs. "It's defined me as a human being, in my opinion, the last five years. I've been so blessed, our class has been so blessed, our team has been so blessed. It's been such an amazing experience."
Holy Cross finished the season with a 7-4 record, but did not receive a bid for the NCAA FCS championship tournament.
