LEOMINSTER, Mass. - West Boylston earned the chance to play for a second straight state title at Gillette Stadium by winning on both sides of the ball Saturday night at Doyle Field. The Lions rolled to a 36-0 win over Cathedral in the state semifinal.
The WB's powerful running attack took control early in the first quarter. Jamie McNamara capped the first scoring drive with a three-yard touchdown run. John Ruas added the two-point conversion to give the Lions an 8-0 lead.
Cathedral did force two West Boylston turnovers, but the Lions defense responded twice on short fields. Ruas, Jake O'Brien and Dominic Renzoni stood out making key plays to thwart any chance the Panthers had of scoring in the first half.
Quarterback Luke Foley got the locals moving again in the second quarter dumping a pass off to McNamara who got a wicked block and ran the ball deep into Cathedral territory. Jackson Caramanica finished the drive with a touchdown run to give West Boylston a 14-0 lead. The senior also had a 33-yard sideline run earlier to energize the scoring drive.
The Lions took control in the second half with Foley and McNamara leading the offense and the defense pitching another shutout. West Boylston, who won the division seven title last year, will now move on play Carver in the division eight state championship game.
