WORCESTER, Mass. - The Green Island Neighborhood Center is helping to feed more than 300 families this Thanksgiving.
On Saturday, people lined up at Crompton Park for their free turkeys and Thanksgiving sides. The event was sponsored by Tufts Health Plan, and included volunteers from Fitchburg State University, Friendly House and other community organizations.
The Green Island Neighborhood Association helps connect people with resources across the city, and helps keep families fed year-round with a food pantry.
"It's really important, it feels good that we're able to help be part of serving more than 300 families, and that we're providing a Thanksgiving meal for them," said volunteer Morgan Stidham.
"All the other bills have to kind of come first, and food gets stretched," said Trish Appert, Executive Director of Friendly House. "People who are working, who seem to be holding it all together, are really often hurting without the food. So what they're doing here today is really wonderful."
The event also featured activites and giveaways, information from local community organizations and a raffle.
"This is making a difference in the community," said Green Island Neighborhood Center Director Hilda Maldonado. "Our second annual distribution, and we're thinking of doing this every year. There's always space to help the community."
