WORCESTER, Mass. — It's a life-saving gift, and one in great need. Advocates walked in Worcester Sunday to raise awareness on organ donation.

New England Donor Services hosted their annual Blue and Green Walk and 5K in an effort to get as many people to register as organ donors as possible.

The community event featured a timed 5K course, as well as a memorial butterfly path and circle of life garden.

Teams walked in memory of loved ones who donated organs, to honor living donors, and celebrate life.

New England Donor Services says more than 100,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for a transplant.

New England Donor Services says in addition to organ donation, tissue donations help over one million individuals every year. They include skin, tendon, and ligament donations.

People can also donate their corneas and give the gift of sight.

As of Sunday afternoon, the nonprofit has raised more than $80,000.
