WORCESTER, Mass. — Doctors at UMass Memorial Medical Center traded in their white coats for something a little more fashionable to help raise awareness for cancer.
Local medical professionals, cancer survivors, and even city leaders, like Mayor Joseph Petty, strutted the catwalk Friday night at the first annual Vintage Fashion Show.
Each of the 20 models showed off some vintage clothing on the runway, representing decades past as they made "the walk" at Worcester's Union Station.
The goal of the show was to raise money and awareness for colon cancer and research.
"We are super excited to be involved with this," said Dr. Justin Maykel, chief of colorectal surgery for UMass Memorial Health. "It's a great event, a great cause. We spent a lot of our time focused on cancer prevention and education, and to partner with community members really means a lot. It's going to go a long way in getting the word out there with regards to cancer prevention."
"It is a great charitable event for the community for the cancer work UMass is doing right now," said Petty. "Glad I was able to participate, have some fun, get to do the walkway. I Want to thank Perfect Fit for outfitting us today. They did a great job."
Organizers were hoping to raise more than $20,000 for the cancer division, caretakers and patients in the hospital.
