SUTTON, Mass. - The Sutton Fire Department responded Wednesday to a fire at the Red Roof Inn.

The fire started in a kitchen, according to fire chief Matthew Belsito. He said the National Guard was on-scene assisting migrant families when the fire broke out. Guardsmen tried to stop the flames with a fire extinguisher but were unsuccessful.

Belsito said he has had concerns with the property even before Wednesday’s fire.

“The Sutton public safety officials have voiced our concerns to the appropriate officials that we have some concerns about the safety,” Belsito said. “From my standpoint, there is no sprinkler system, I do not have the municipal water system here. We’ve had some concerns with the 911 system.”

At least one person, who the Belsito said was an occupant of the hotel, was taken to the hospital. A National Guardsman was also treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.

“Thankfully, I think people recognized there was imminent danger and they started self-evacuating,” Belsito said.
