SHREWSBURY, Mass. - The Shrewsbury Police Department commemorated the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks Monday with a new memorial at their headquarters.

The memorial contains a piece of the World Trade Center. It was put together with the help of students and staff from Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School's metal fabrication program.

Chief Kevin Anderson said they made the memorial a priority when they were building the new police station.

"Though they were not alive at the time of the 9/11 attacks, these students listened as people told them their own stories and accounts of that day," Anderson said. "They met with members of a generation who lived through a defining, world changing event, coming to understand not just the magnitude of what occurred that day, but also the enduring legacy of patriotism, perseverance and unity it gave us all."

Anderson said the memorial should serve as a reminder of the first responders who perished on 9/11, including 23 New York City police officers.
