WORCESTER, Mass. - Former Shepherd Hill football star Chris Lindstrom, now an NFL Pro Bowl guard for the Atlanta Falcons, helped out an old high school rival this summer.
Lindstrom nominated the Doherty High School football team for an NFL Urban Scholarship, and the Highlanders were chosen to get one. With the new Doherty High School building being built, there was no weight room for the players to use this summer. So, with some of the money from the NFL scholarship, the whole team was able to lift at Worcester State all summer.
"We had a great session of summer workouts, every day everyone was getting there," said linebacker and running back Patrick Dowd. "Chris Lindstrom got us a big donation, so we were able to workout at Worcester State this summer. It was very good for us."
"Lifting this year at Worcester State was big," said running back Malachi Burke. "We didn't [lift] a lot last year and that was part of the problem. But we got that this year. Chris Lindstrom had a huge rivalry with Doherty, so it shows what it means to him to give back to a team that he used to play against and where he is now."
Doherty opens up their season Friday night at Foley Stadium against Algonquin.
