DOUGLAS, Mass. – Douglas Orchard and Farm opened Friday for the first day of apple picking season.
The family-run operation will be open for pick-your-own apples Friday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Oct. 1.
After dealing with last summer’s drought, this year brought its own set of challenges, including one of the rainiest summers on record.
“You can see a lot of our apples look absolutely beautiful for the amount of rain that we got and being lucky that the frost did not hit a lot of our apples,” said co-owner Nick Socrat. “I've been farming for probably 20 years now, because I started when I was like 9, and there's so many. You can never master farming. There's always something that you're going to learn because nature is unpredictable.”
The farm did see its strawberry and peach crops suffer heavy losses from the spring frost, but they’re hoping to have better luck next season.
