WORCESTER, Mass. – The City of Worcester recognized members of the Carpenters Local 336 union Monday night for their volunteer work at Coes Pond.

The group of carpenters built several picnic tables for families using the beach. Union member Frank Gomez said he has high hopes for this project.

“The carpenters’ union, we like to reflect our communities,” Gomez said. “So, many of our members work and live here in Worcester and that’s why we decided to do this project. Not only are the families in Worcester going to be able to enjoy those picnic tables, but our members as well. They’ll be able to create memories, fun memories for the family.”

Robert Antonelli, assistant commissioner for the Department of Public Works and Parks, said the collaboration between the city and the union is beneficial for everyone.

“For us, it’s fabulous on the partnership side,” Antonelli said. “We do this a little bit with the Worcester Technical High School, and working with the carpenters has been a wonderful and great experience. It gives us the ability to add amenities to our park facilities at minimal cost for the City of Worcester.”

Fontaine Brothers Construction helped support the project, along with the city’s public works and parks departments. The idea for the picnic benches was first proposed by District 5 city councilor Etel Haxhiaj.
