ADAMS, Mass. — The Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum's newest exhibit will feature a rare hand in hand cast made by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The museum said the piece portrays the value they placed on collaboration as well as their affection for one another in the struggle to win for women the right to vote.

The exhibit celebrates Women’s Equality Day, which is on August 26.

“It's pretty cool to have something like this. Susan and Elizabeth had their hands clasped to celebrate Elizabeth Cady Stanton's 80th birthday.”

Martin Loughman is the docent of the birthplace museum in Adams.

The museum said this cast is one of only four made by Anthony and Stanton, which were gifted to members of their family.

The new exhibit also features Anthony’s personal bank book and a letter she wrote to her nephew Luther ‘Bert’ Anthony. The items and the cast have been donated by Bert’s granddaughter.

This month marks 103 years since the 19th Amendment granted women in America the right to vote, a movement Anthony and Stanton spent most of their lives fighting for.

“Susan and Elizabeth first met in 1851," Loughman said. "This was a few years after Elizabeth had organized the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention. And the Women's Rights Convention is really what kicked off the suffrage movement in the United States. But when Susan and Elizabeth met, they got along very well, became very good friends, and during their years of activism work together, they worked tirelessly advocating for women's voting rights.”

The Hand in Hand exhibit will be on display starting Thursday, August 24, to celebrate Women's Equality Day on August 26. The Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum summer hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays until their season ends in October.
