WORCESTER, Mass. — The weather being a bit cooler Sunday made it a beautiful day for some softball, and some seniors took advantage of the opportunity.
This weekend, Massachusetts Senior Games hosted their first softball tournament up at Worcester’s Green Hill.
The nonprofit, also known as MASG, is dedicated to facilitating health and wellness for older adults through organized individual and team competitions.
For this year’s tournament, there were eight teams who played over the weekend — culminating with Sunday’s championship game.
Players came from all four state regions: Cape Cod, Boston, Worcester and Western Mass.
“The Massachusetts Senior Games, our objective is to get people who are older back into sports that they used to play or to encourage them to continue to play for their wellness, their health, and also comaraderie,” said MASG’s Joanie Simmons.
“It’s healthy. We have gate rules that are made for older folks yet we still play the game absolutely all out,” said Doug Belanger, who helped organize the event. “You can tell by the end of the day when you see us.”
“What every single one of us has in common is that we recognize how lucky we are to be able to play a game we love at the age that we have reached,” said Steve Bober, who plays for the Rollin’ 60s team. “We’re here to have a good time, and I can tell you that every single guy I’ve spoken to has had a blast. It’s a fun tournament, it’s really well done.”
The nonprofit provides seniors with a wide list of sports to play, including track and field, basketball, tennis and disc golf, among others.
