WORCESTER, Mass. – A small ceremony was held Thursday at the Korean War Memorial in Downtown Worcester to commemorate National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day.

The day marks the end of the Korean War 70 years ago. More than 36,000 Americans were killed, and 7,000 others remain unaccounted for.

Local Korean War veteran Frank Carroll said it’s important to remember the sacrifice of the soldiers.

"Every one of these bricks was laid by a Korean War vet who fought in Korea,” Carroll said. “In most cases, bricks are in the name of men in their unit who were killed and didn't survive. A lot of emotion here."

The war was the first of the Cold War era, erupting when North Korean forces crossed the border into South Korea.

National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day was celebrated for the first time in 1995.
