WORCESTER, Mass. – Lifeguards returned Thursday to Worcester’s Bell Pond Beach. It was the first time this summer the swimming area was fully staffed.

The city originally opened Bell Pond this summer without lifeguards because of a staffing shortage.

City Manager Eric Batista said they've since been able to hire more people which will allow the site to be staffed Thursday through Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. He said he's hoping to expand services even further if the city can find more lifeguards.

“As we receive more lifeguards, and as more people apply, it will help us to expand the number of days and hopefully provide seven days a week of services,” Batista said.

Bell Pond will remain staffed with lifeguards through its closing day on Aug. 20. Coes Pond Beach remains open but does not have lifeguards on duty.
