EASTHAMPTON, Mass. - Portions of western Massachusetts are still dealing with flooding issues and road closures.
Route 5 near Oxbow was closed Wednesday morning in both directions, with barricades in place on both the Easthampton and Northampton sides. It was just one the closures in Easthampton, as Forthill Road was also closed Wednesday.
Easthampton Mayor Nicole LaChapelle said this flooding is a once in a decade event and the city is not in the clear yet.
“We expect that the water could rise very quickly and with very little notice due to rain up north and the water coming down, and also our own rain,” LaChapelle said. “When we’re talking about flooding, it’s not like water just goes away, it leaves behind it very disrupted soil. What you see in your backyard, that little stream, it really takes silt away with it, and that makes it more dangerous for more water. So, we’re really on our tippy toes.”
LaChapelle said Easthampton has also provided resources to surrounding towns in an effort to help communities experiencing even worse water destruction.
