LEICESTER, Mass. - Three former Becker College buildings in Leicester will be used as emergency housing for families. The town is partnering with the state and the Central Mass Housing Alliance for the project.
The buildings can fit up to 63 families and clients will start moving in at the end of the month. The town bought the campus in December of 2021 following the school’s closure.
Town Administrator David Genereaux said the purpose of the program is to help families in a fragile economy.
"They're helping people, and in this economy where we are now, the vast majority of families are one job loss, one life-event away from possibly being in this situation,” Genereaux said. “So if we can help people, and we can help the town, to us it makes sense"
Genereux said the lease will bring in about $2 million every year to the town, If the project does not work out, he said they've arranged for an out-clause in the contract.
