SUTTON, Mass. - When Lt. Lisa Sullivan first joined the Sutton Police Department in 2011, they didn't even have a Facebook page. Now, it's an everyday tool.
"This is such a serious business, why not have fun until you need to be serious," she said.
Sullivan is the writer behind the department's witty Facebook posts. For inspiration, she pulls from a page that's almost always buzzing - the town's local Facebook group, where recently, an elderly resident shared a post about a failed car inspection.
"There is no better place to find out what's really irking the folks in town than there," Sullivan said. "And when I saw someone chimed in that she should race up and down 146 and then go to Wright's Chicken Farm, that's gold."
Police were so intrigued by the advice, they offered to go with her.
"Like hey, we will go for the ride with you, let's make it happen," Sullivan said.
But Sullivan uses the platform for more than just a laugh. She said it's become one of the best ways to get critical information out to the public quickly.
"We had a report for someone with a firearm at our school, we vetted it and put a statement out," Sullivan said. "That was super important because it was the game of telephone, where one person changed a piece here and there. We were the official spokesperson."
In between the serious and light hearted posts, Sullivan said the key is building trust between the department, and its community.
"Who better to tell our story than us? Police officers are human beings," she said. "We are funny, we have families. We are wives, daughters, husbands and things like that, and people need to know that."
