WORCESTER, Mass. - Wednesday was Flag Day and several American Legion Posts around the country use it as a day to properly retire the American flag.

In Worcester, Wednesday evening's rain changed the typical ceremony at Vernon Hill Post 435. Every year, they properly dispose of all worn, torn and faded flags by burning them.

Senior Vice Commander Dennis Beatty said it's the proper way, but because of the rain, this year they've folded up the flag and will hand it off to the commander for when the weather is nice enough for them to burn it.

"All of the veterans fought for it, so it's out of respect, the proper way of disposing our flag," said Beatty. "To a veteran, it's a very emotional ceremony."

A small ceremony was still held inside at Post 435 Wednesday night. Inside the building, there is a box people can use to place their worn American flags in for proper disposal.
