WORCESTER, Mass. – The City of Worcester is responding to a report released this month finding that Polar Park will not financially deliver the way the city promised.
City Manager Eric Batista said the park is generating enough revenue to cover the cost of any debt related to the park. He said that the park covered its cost last year and it’s covering its cost this year, and it will next year as well.
Batista added that if the park was not generating enough revenue, the public would know.
“If we were to dip into any general fund or any departments, we’d be coming to council requesting any transfers of those departments to be put into the ballpark,” Batista said. “People would know once we did that. The important thing for people to understand is that at any point in time, if we were to request tax levy dollars to be put into the ballpark, outside of that district, the council would know, the public would know, the media would know and it would be something very significant.”
Batista said that he will be bringing a report to city council in the next few weeks which will provide a breakdown of the park’s finances.
