Beginning Wednesday, the Ernest A. Johnson tunnel on Main Street in Worcester will be closed for construction, the city manager’s office announced.

MassDOT crews were getting to work at the site Wednesday morning. The Worcester Department of Public Works said the plan is to remove tiles from the ceiling and walls and conduct a structural analysis of the tunnel itself.

The project will last about 4 months and the DPW expects to reopen the tunnel to traffic sometime in September. The department said drivers should expect to see construction vehicles and equipment in and around the tunnel while the project is ongoing.
