NORTH BROOKFIELD , Mass. - Natty is an 8-month-old poodle, who isn't letting anything stand in his way. He’s full of energy, but walking around a little different these days.

"A dog like Natty, who is only 8 months old, deserves to have that second chance," said Lindsay Doray, Second Chance Animal Services chief development officer.

Natty's owners surrendered him to Second Chance Animal Services last week with a severe injury to one of his back legs.

"They didn't know how the injury happened," said Sheryl Blancato, Second Chance Animal Services CEO. "They were trying to take care of the leg, but they had some other personal issues going on and they weren't able to keep the dog."

For days, staff did all they could to save the leg, keep Natty comfortable and help him recover, but the nerve damage was too severe and he was in pain. On Monday, they amputated the leg.

"It's night and day," Blancato said. "I mean, he is a happy, happy dog now."

Less than 48 hours after losing a leg, Natty was back on the move, walking around and wagging his tail.

"The cone is irritating him, but the leg is not," Blancato said. "For dogs, they don't lament over losing a leg like humans do. We would be really upset because we only have two. "

It didn't take very long for Natty to adjust. He found his balance just fine. He has some more healing to do and will soon need a new home and loving owner. Blancato said he will be available of adoption sometime in the next few weeks.

"We want a family that understands he does have three legs," Blancato said. "You just have to give him a lot of exercise and a lot of love. I mean that is what's important."

Blancato said Natty should have a full life ahead of him. He is a normal dog who will run and play and navigate life just fine, even with just three legs.

"I can guarantee that once he is all healed up in a few weeks from now, he is going to be running around like crazy," she said. "Just Like a typical 8-month-old puppy."

Natty's medical expenses are about $2,500. Doray said they are actively accepting donations to pay for the bill.
