What You Need To Know
- Governor Maura Healey was sworn into office January 5,2023
- Governor Healey released her $55.5 billion budget on March 1st
- Her toughest criticism so far has been the slow appointment of an MBTA General Manager
- Her next big focus is passing the budget this summer.
She became the first female governor elected in the state’s history, and the first openly lesbian governor elected to the position in the country.
On her inauguration day, she pledged to make housing affordable in Massachusetts.
“We have to make Massachusetts a place people can afford to call home,” said Gov. Healey in her inauguration speech.
When she visited Worcester’s Grand Street Commons development in early March, she again said it's a top priority for the administration.
“We understand that in order for the commonwealth to move forward we need more housing. We need more housing now, we needed more housing yesterday,” she said back in March. “We need housing in every county, in every community across the state.”
On March 1, Gov. Healey introduced her first budget. It was the first time the public got to see which campaign promises were the top priorities.
The $55.5 billion package was filed alongside a massive tax relief plan, focused on larger returns for families with children, renters, and estates.
Just last week, Gov. Healey ordered the state to stockpile mifepristone, a common abortion drug, to ensure Massachusetts is well stocked if a Texas court ruling holds, revoking its approval.
So far, the governor has polled well and is often compared to former governor Charlie Baker as toward the center and well liked.
The biggest criticism for the Healey administration was the time it took to name a new general manager for the struggling MBTA. Since the position is now filled, the next 100 days will focus on getting the budget passed.
