WORCESTER, Mass. – Community partners held a ribbon cutting Thursday at Worcester's City View Discovery School for a new, in-school food pantry.
The pantry is being named the “Eagle’s Nest” and will be accessible to the more than 400 students ranging from pre-k to sixth grade.
Stop & Shop, UMass Chan Medical School, the Juniper Outreach Foundation and Consigli Construction came together to make the project possible. They said they are happy they could make a positive change in the fight against student hunger in the city.
“The mission is to make sure that kids do not have to go to school hungry, and today is an important milestone in that endeavor,” said Jennifer Brogan, director of external communications for Stop & Shop. “Our Stop & Shop food pantry program, through which we’ve actually opened 170 in-school pantries across the northeast.”
“It was such an impactful opportunity and meaningful opportunity for us at Consigli that our employees jumped at the opportunity to come put paint on the wall, put some carpet down and shelves,” said Michael Fales of Consigli Construction. “But the bigger thing for them was really being able to give back and make an impact to not only the community, but you guys.”
The school's student council will run the pantry, which organizers said will help students learn to help others.
