SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass. - Concerns remain about an incident at Southbridge High School calling into question the safety of the school system.

The Southbridge Educational Association said in March, a student shared videos of himself to social media holding a gun in one of the high school's bathrooms. The school said they immediately took action and police placed the student into custody. However, the SEA said no lockdown or restrictions were called to protect students or staff.

The district is under state control, so they are now calling on receiver Jeffrey Villa to create more transparent safety protocols. Town councilor Dave Adams said safety in the schools is a top priority for the town.

"It's unacceptable that we have a 20-year-old male who brought a gun into our school and took picture with it or a video and then left he school and dropped it off," Adams said. "I will say, no one knew what was happening at the time. So you have to give credit where credit is due, but he and those individuals should be held fully responsible."

Adams said this is part of a bigger problem. Back in 2015, the state took over the Southbridge school system because it was under-performing. Since then, they've gone through three receivers. Adams said there's is a lack of communication from the state with the school board and town.

"I need to start seeing from the state level, the higher level, from the commissioner, you've taken over our school system, maybe that was legit, but how do we move on from here," Adams said. "Dr. Villar, I believe he has been an honest broker. He has no problem telling you what's wrong or what he's dealing with. I meet with him every couple months and I think the town council and school board should be constantly meeting with Dr. Villar."

In a statement, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education said they are committed to being a partner with Southbridge schools and are in regular contact with town and school leaders as well as the receiver.

Adams said they are holding a council meeting on April 25, where they will be inviting the DESE commissioner, school leaders and local lawmakers .
