WORCESTER, Mass. – Crews at Polar Park are spending the week getting the field ready for Opening Day this Friday.
Polar Park's assistant field superintendent Ryan Lefler said this year is a little different because it's an earlier start to the season. He said while it's been a mild winter, sometimes heavier snow can help insulate the grass, but thankfully, the late snow that did fall this month is already gone
"We kind of knew going into the winter with early start for Opening Day for us there was a chance we could kind of have that little bit of a speed bump with a late snowstorm, and we got it, but we were prepared,” Lefler said.
“The only real difference this year was more the timing of when we got snow, like we got it in March. We got a good six, seven inches a few weeks ago and, basically in that situation we'll spread dark green sand on the snow and then when that combines with the sunlight, it took less than 24 hours and it was all gone."
Lelfer said crews take a lot of pride in the field and, in the next few days leading up to Opening Day, they'll be putting on their final touches.
