WORCESTER, Mass. - Local law enforcement agencies partnered with the Law Enforcement Torch Run to host the first annual Polar Plunge at Polar Park Friday.
First responders took turns jumping into a pool to support Special Olympics Massachusetts. As of Friday afternoon, they had already surpassed their goal of raising $25,000.
"We are trying to bring inclusive sports opportunities to communities all over the state, schools all over the state and we can't do that without community partnerships like our law enforcement friends and family here in Worcester and around the state,” said Stephanie Esposito, associate vice president of development for Special Olympics Massachusetts.
"It’s very special to have it here, especially at Polar Park with the polar plunge,” said Worcester Police Lt. Chris Murphy. “It's good to get everyone involved and I think next year it'll be even bigger."
"The partnership between community police and Special Olympics is something that's really special to me, so I'm happy to be here with everybody today,” said Massachusetts State Police Trooper Farrah Gray.
More than 150 people participated in the plunge. UMass Chan Medical School helped organize Friday’s event and recruited departments from across the region.
