State. Rep. David LeBoeuf (D-Worcester) is the latest local official to share his concerns regarding Worcester's new charter school, the Worcester Cultural Academy.
The state Board of Elementary and Secondary education voted Tuesday to approve a charter for the school. The Worcester School Committee has requested the state auditor conduct and investigation into Old Sturbridge Village, which will operate the school, Old Sturbridge Village Academy and Worcester Cultural Academy.
LeBouef is among several local lawmakers who oppose the school coming to Worceseter. He said he's concerned the school will become a source of revenue for Old Sturbridge Village.
"In their annual report, they stated the revenue stream is to open up charters," LeBouef said. "With charters, the intention of the law was not to create a piggy bank for privated entities to steal public money and line the pockets of instituions not doing well. It's to serve students, and that's not what this propsal is doing."
While the charter has been granted, LeBoeuf said Worcester Cultural Academy and the board of education still need to reach an agreement.
